Join Team River Runner members for an unforgettable backcountry river adventure on the Upper New River in West Virginia! We are currently planning a self-supported, multi-day rafting and kayaking expedition through one of the East Coast’s most scenic river corridors.
This 4-day / 3-night trip will cover approximately 35 miles of river travel, combining moving water, Class II–III rapids (depending on water levels), and long stretches of flatwater paddling. Participants should be prepared for full days on the river, variable weather conditions, and the physical and mental endurance required for a remote wilderness-style expedition.
All group gear, food, and camping equipment will be transported downstream on rafts and in capable expedition-style kayaks. Due to limited storage space on the raft oar rigs, participants are strongly encouraged to paddle their own kayak or raft when possible. Kayaks can be provided by TRR if needed.
Participants should plan to bring their own compact, packable camping equipment, including:
Tent/hammock or bivy shelter
Sleeping bag and sleeping pad
Camp chair
River-appropriate clothing and footwear
Dry bags or waterproof storage for personal items (TRR has plenty to lend if needed)
Personal medications and hygiene items
TRR-FXBG has two (2) extra camping gear setups available for participants who may need them.
We will camp at designated National Park Service riverside campsites along the route. Campsites include pit toilets, but otherwise amenities will be extremely limited or nonexistent. Participants should expect primitive camping conditions and be comfortable spending multiple days outdoors without showers, electricity, or reliable cell service.
This trip will be participant funded, meaning all participants will split the cost of food expenses and any necessary fees/permits etc.
Safety equipment, trip logistics, and paddling expectations will be discussed prior to departure. Prior paddling experience is strongly recommended, especially comfort navigating moving water and spending extended time in a boat. Final trip details, launch location, gear lists, and shuttle plans will be shared with accepted participants closer to the event date.
Expect little to no cell service - disconnect from the noise, unwind on the water, and reconnect with nature alongside fellow TRR veterans and paddlers.
Applications will close 10 July 2026 and participants will be notified of acceptance within a week after.
